Guided Wave Ultrasonic Testing

Advanced technology for detecting corrosion over long distances of material.

Guided Wave Ultrasonic Testing (GWUT) is a technology for detecting corrosion over long distance of material.

With GWUT, a ring of transducers is fitted round the outer part of the component which is being inspected, and this ring of transducers sends a sound wave along the length of the component, rather that through it. The component itself (usually a pipe) constrains or guides the waves along the wall, hence the term ‘guided wave’.

Guided Wave technology allows for inspection of up to 150m of pipe from a single location and provides 100% direct assessment of pipe lengths.

Benefits of Guided Wave Ultrasonic Testing (GWUT)

  • Rapid screening for in-service degradation.
  • Cost reduction in gaining access to pipes for inspection.
  • Avoidance of removal and reinstatement of insulation or coatings (where present), except for the area on which the transducer tool is mounted.
  • The ability of inspect inaccessible areas such as clamps or sleeved or buried pipes.
  • The whole pipe wall is tested, thereby achieving a 100% examination.
